Bahrain participates in Asia Pacific Forum of national human rights institutions

Manama, Sept. 10 (BNA): National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) Chairperson Maria Khoury participated in the 25th annual virtual meeting of the Asia Pacific Forum of national human rights institutions. Maria stressed the NIHR’s role in following up the precautionary measures taken by the Kingdom to prevent the spread of the coronavirus and their impact on human rights, particularly those of the expatriate workers. She noted the NIHR’s readiness to share its experience with the participants in the forum. The meeting, held for the first time in the Forum’s history online, brought together all 25 APF member institutions, along with representatives from other national human rights institutions (NHRIs) in the region. The participants approved the Forum’s budget and its role in the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) concerned with the promotion and protection of human rights. It also discussed the preparations for holding the annual meeting virtually in October, with the help of the Sub-Committee on Accreditation (SCA) before the end of this year, after it was postponed in March due to the pandemic.
