PICK-UP IN E&E EXPORT ORDERS IN Q2

SHAH ALAM (Malaysia), April 28 (Bernama) -- There has been a pick up in
export orders in the current quarter in certain sectors such as electrical and
electronic products, deputy minister of international trade and industry Mukhriz
Mahathir, said here Tuesday.

"We have received reports from northern Penang that show orders slowly
picking up but we have to see the longer period," he told reports after the
flagging off ceremony of Naza Bikes Export To Iran and Brunei.

However, Mukhriz said the ministry has yet to see this development as a
trend.

"Exports in the first quarter were quite slow but the second quarter is
beginning to lift up," he said.

He also said that latest developments in China following the imposition of
its stimulus package which would spur its economy will have a positive impact on
Malaysia.

Turning to the United States-Malaysia free trade agreement, he said Malaysia
was awaiting signals (from the new administration in Washington) to proceed with

negotiations.

Mukhriz also said government will continue to support activities that
contribute to economic growth by enhancing industry capabilities.

With the current slow economic growth the government is fully aware that
there will always be effects on the industry, he said.

"Opportunities and risks are everywhere - in emerging and mature markets
alike. But while possibilities are plentiful, profitable growth is becoming more
difficult to achieve," he said.

"Amidst this landscape, industries must conduct their business and adapt to
new regulations, reduce costs as well as manage capacity and inventory," he
said.
