STRUCTURAL CHANGES TO ECONOMY BASED ON CREATIVITY, INNOVATION, SAYS NAJIB
PUTRAJAYA, April 28 (Bernama) -- The government plans to introduce structural changes to the economy based on a new model with creativity and innovation as the thrusts in its long-term challenge.
Prime Minister Najib Razak said under the new model the government would
develop the service sector as the "growth engine" and a new source of wealth and
at the same time encourage the manufacturing sector to move towards to higher
value of networking.
"I hope these measures can holistically address the economic slowdown the
country is facing now, "of being neither here nor there.
"This means we can no longer be regarded as a low-cost production centre, we
also have not been able to prop up the nation to a higher level in the
production sector value chain
"I hope the new economic model will become a catalyst to Malaysia to upgrade
its status from a "upper middle income" country to a "high income" nation,"
he said when speaking at the 10th Public Service Department premier function at
Putrajaya International Convention Centre.
Najib said the move would also place Malaysia back on the right track to
realise objectives of Vision 2020 to transform Malaysia into an advanced nation.
To mitigate short-term challenges confronting the country now, the prime
minister said pre-emptive measures have been put in place to ensure the country
experienced only minimum impact from the global economic and financial turmoil
curently plaguing the world.
"The challenge is to wriggle out from the economic an financial crises as
quickly as possible and to help the people ease their hardship in making ends
meet, he said.
Najib however expressed confidence the civil service would continue to play
their role judiciously to tide over with the current and future challenges as
history had proven government employees had helped in Malaysia's transformation
process.
They have played their role in transforming the country from an agriculture
country to a modern industrialised nation to the extent of Malaysia emerging
among the 20 world's biggest trading nations," he added.
