200,000 PERSONNEL TO GET FLU VACCINE INJECTIONS

PUTRAJAYA, April 30 (Bernama) -- Some 200,000 personnel including doctors, nurses, Immigration staff and police involved in the screening and treatment of people with flu will be given vaccine injections in light of a pandemic swine flu threat.

Health Minister Liow Tiong Lai said the flu vaccine injections
would be given over a two-week period to all the relevant personnel, including
those at the country's 125 entry/exit points.

"This is among the ministry's preventive and precautionary measures
following the swine flu outbreak (in Mexico)," he told reporters, here,
Wednesday.

Liow said all the vaccine stocking centres in the country had been told to
be prepared to ensure smooth distribution of the vaccine if the situation
warranted.

"The ministry has enough vaccine for about two million people at any one
time," he added.

Liow said although there been no suspected case of swine flu in the country,
the people were advised to be cautious.

"The ministry will issue a statement from time to time but until 2.30pm
Wednesday, there has been no case of swine flu in the country.

"The public should not be unduly worried as the operations rooms to monitor
the situation have been activated throughout the country and they are prepared
to face any eventuality," he said.

Liow said 28 hospitals had also been identified as quarantine centres but so
far, only the Sungai Buloh Hospital had been turned into one.

He said the Technical Committee involving the relevant agencies which had
been meeting fortnightly would now meet weekly to ensure better coordination in
the implementation of preventive and control measures.

On a patient now quarantined at the Sungai Buloh Hospital, Liow said the
patient was placed under close observation for flu and had not been categorised
as suspected case of swine flu as the hospital had yet to receive the test
results from the Institute of Medical Research.

"We may know the results by Wednesday evening," he said.
