QNB Stars League: Al Khor Records First Win

Doha, December 14 (QNA) - Al Khor won Monday their first match of the season, defeating Al Wakrah 1-0. Giannis Fetfatzidid scored the all-important goal in the 31st minute. The Knights now have seven points as they have also recorded four draws and as many defeats. Al Wakrah remained on 10 points with their fifth defeat, as they once again paid the price for inconsistency in performance. The Blue Wave, who had lost to Al Sadd in the previous round, had beaten champions Al Duhail earlier in the tournament. Al Wakrah had 61 per cent possession at the final whistle, but they failed to find the target. Al Khor took advantage of the opportunity to take the lead even though possession was almost equal in the first half. Giannis linked up well with Leonardo De Souza in taking advantage of a mis-pass on the part of Al Wakrah and grabbing the ball from near the centre circle. QNB Stars League's website said that the Greek attacking midfielder then quickly made his way into the box and unleashed a rising shot past Al Wakrah goalkeeper Mohamed Saeed. During the first half, Al Khors Rafael Santos had a free-kick tipped over the bar by the goalkeeper, while Al Wakrahs spearhead Mohamed Benyettou was thwarted twice by goalkeeper Baba Djibril. Al Khor had a chance to double the lead towards the close of first half, but Yuki Kobayashis shot was saved by Al Wakrahs Abdulrahman Mohammed, conceding a corner kick. After Al Khor continued from where they left off at the start of second half, Al Wakrah took control of the proceedings. Al Khor mostly defended even as Al Wakrah attacked more and most of their moves were aimed at Benyettou who, however, could not prove effective. So were Omar Ali, Cristian Ceballos and Ousmane Coulibaly. Benyettou hitting his shot over the bar in stoppage time best personified Al Wakrahs fate. (QNA)
