RI TAKING PART IN BELGIUM CHOCOLATE FESTIVAL

London, May 3 (ANTARA) - Indonesia, the world's third biggest cocoa producer, is taking part in the Chocolate Festival in Belfort Brugge, Belgium, on May 1-4.

Indonesia's participation in the event was very important now that cocoa was an integral part of the European people's needs, spokesman for the Indonesian embassy in Brussels, Priatna, said in a statement on Sunday.

He said Indonesia was one of the main cocoa suppliers to Belgium where the product was processed into an industrial product of high economic value.

Europe is the world's biggest cocoa consumer with an annual consumption growth rate of 1.7 percent. The continent's cocoa needs in 2010 are projected at 40 percent of the global needs.

Indonesia is the world's third biggest cocoa producer after the Ivory Coast and Ghana. Indonesia's cocoa production is projected to grow by 3.5 percent to 750 thousand tons in 2010, accounting for 16 percent of global production.

Cocoa is cultivated on around one million hectares of land in Indonesia. Cocoa is Indonesia's third biggest foreign exchange earner in the agricultural sector after rubber and palm oil.
