NIHR notified about detainee's death

Manama, Jan. 15 (BNA): The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) was today notified by the General Directorate of Reformation and Rehabilitation about the death of a Bahraini detainee, aged 20, at the Detention centre. The deceased was isolated, in accordance with the precautionary measures in force to combat the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). The NIHR reviewed the statement issued by the General Directorate of Reformation and Rehabilitation, and the legal procedures it has taken in this regard. A delegation from the NIHR’s Council of Commissioners will make a field visit to the Detention Centre to ensure that the precautions and measures taken to preserve the rights, safety and security of inmates are in accordance with human rights standards. The NIHR stressed that the competent authorities, particularly the Public Prosecution and the Interior Ministry, should take the necessary procedures to fast-track investigations into the incident. The NIHR extended profound condolences to the relatives of the deceased, praying to Allah the Almighty to bless them with patience and fortitude.
