News Focus: POLICE EVENTUALLY DETAIN KPK CHIEF IN ALLEGED MURDER CASE

By Eliswan Azly

Jakarta, May 4 (ANTARA) - The Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Antasari Azhar, on Monday is now detained at the Metro Jaya Police Detention Center for drug offenders after being named a suspect in the alleged muder case of Nasrudin Zulkarnaen, Director of PT. Putra Rajawali Banjaran (PRB).
Public Relations Police Chief at the Police Headquarters Inspector General Abubakar Nataprawira said Antasari was detained at the Metro Jaya Police detention center for narcotic offenders.
Antasari was interrogated for several hours as a witness in connection with the murder case at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police's general crime building.

Abubakar said Antasari signed the warrant for his detention at 4.40pm.

Earlier the police comfirmed the KPK chairman had been non active as a suspect, the motive of which behind the murder case was still unknown
With regard to Antasari's present status, Jakarta Police Chief Inspector General Wahyono said that based on evidence, Antasara Azhar following the interrogation had been declared suspect.

"Later we will wait for the process of introduction," he said adding the motive of the murder was still being established.

In the meantime, Antasari's lawyer Assegaf said that his client was regarded liable under article 340 of the Criminal Code.

Assegaf said the police had named his client suspect under Article 340 for issuing an order or recommendation (to commit murder).

"I did not have information from other witnesses," he said.

Antasari's other lawyer, Farhat Abas, meanwhile said that his client believed he was not guilty in the case. "The motive behind this will be revealed later," he said.

Regarding his client being declared as suspect, he said it was based upon statements from other witnesses. "It is not clear. They went directly to witnesses and other evidence," he said.

Asked if he would ask for a suspension of his client's detention Abas said that the matter would be referred to his family. "It will be referred to his family. (We do not know) if the request will be fulfilled or not. Hopefully it will," he said.

Of the nine suspects detained in the murder case, five were security guards, lawyer B.M.S Situmorang said on Monday
"The five suspects in the case of Nasrudin's murder are EN, DD, HS, HK and they are mere security guards and never had special training in the use of fire arms," B.M.S Situmorang said.

He said the wives of the five suspects only knew their husbands worked as security guards in Jakarta. To feed their families they used to change employers for higher wages.

On rumors that they had been trained in using fire arms in Ambon, Situmorang said it was not true. He said they were ordinary security guards, security guards covering premises only. He said they were mere victims of misleading intelligence with regard to Nasrudin's murder.

"They claimed they had received an order to carry out a task for the state, namely to eliminate a person considered to be a trouble-maker with an influence to foil the legislative elections of April 9, 2009," he said.

That was the reason that had made them to have the courage to remain in Jakarta for around 1.5 months after the murder and that was why the police arrested them at their homes.

"If they had felt guilty they would certainly have disappeared. The fact is they remained in Jakarta until the police found and arrested them," he said.

Situmorang reiterated that his clients had only carried out an intelligence order described as a state duty so that they were not afraid they would be arrested or named suspects.

Meanwhile, Dr Sofyan Siregar, a political analyst concurrently roving lecture of the Islamic University of North Sumatra said Antasari's implication in the murder as claimed by the Attorney General's Office was believed to have a link with the KPK Chief's strong crackdowns on corruption including a series of investigations into prosecutors at the Attorney General's office which had proved damaging for officials and their institutions.

"There is an attempt to frame the KPK chairman to be a real perpetrator of the murder. How can the Attorney General's Office (AGO) which happened to be a former post of Antasari is ambitious to immediately declare the KPK chief a suspect in the murder of Nasrudin Zulkarnaen," he said.

"The police began to declare Antasari a suspect in the murder case on Monday, but the Attorney General had already declared him a suspect on Friday. What is exactly behind the Attorney General's issuance of Antasari's status, making people become doubtful about the case whether it is just a trick to terminate Antasari's career or vengeance of those already trapped in Antasari's crackdown on corruptors," he said.

As a clean figure who has the courage to arrest whoever was allegedly involved in a murder would be facing many rivalries and challenges, Sofyan said.

"In my view, this is a trick of those who don't want to see Antasari walk free. Many parties are trying hard to end Antasari's career just because of brave action to combat corruption indiscriminately, so they don't feel free if Antasari is still in power," he said.

"The testimony of a murderer could not serve as evidence," Sofyan said adding that only could the material objects of the probe be accepted as reliable evidence, while the testimony gained from the murderers should be further verified.

According to him, there was a such grand scenario behind this, but he was reluctant to describe it as the case had to do with many parties allegedly involved. "Just let the process run as it is. Later the truth will loom."
