Navy serviceman dies in suspected shooting accident

SEOUL, May 9 (Yonhap) -- A 21-year-old servicemember of the South Korean Navy
died Saturday after he suffered injuries in what appeared to be a self-inflicted
shooting accident, Navy officials said.
The deceased, identified only by his surname Kim, was taken to a hospital after
he was found with bullet wounds in his stomach, they said.
Kim, seaman in rank, was standing guard at the front gate of his base in Donghae,
some 300 kilometers east of Seoul, according to the officials.
"The Navy is trying to find out the exact cause of the incident," an official
said, noting immediate observations suggested Kim had accidentally fired his own
weapon.
