Hiroshima, Nagasaki urge U.S. efforts for nuke disarmament
WASHINGTON, May 8 Kyodo -
The mayors of the two atom-bombed Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
said Friday they have sought U.S. efforts to realize President Barack Obama's
goal of creating a nuclear-free world.
Hiroshima Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba and Nagasaki Mayor Tomihisa Taue also said they
pointed to the need for Obama to visit their cities and know more about them in
order to work toward his objective.
The duo made the calls during a meeting with Eliot Kang, acting assistant
secretary of state for international security and nonproliferation at the State
Department.
The U.S. official was quoted as replying Washington is committed to the nuclear
disarmament goal and will take specific steps to realize it, including
concluding a new nuclear arms limitation deal with Russia this year.
Akiba and Taue were in the U.S. capital after backing Obama's nuclear
disarmament commitment in their speeches to a New York session of the
preparatory committee of the 2010 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review
Conference.
