Ancient Korean painting to go on display at home

SEOUL, May 11 (Yonhap) -- A Korean painting by Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) painter
Ahn Gyeon, currently housed in Japan, is expected to be exhibited at home after
the Japanese university that owns it agreed to lend it out, museum officials here
said Monday.

"Mongyudowondo (Dream Journey to the Peach Blossom Land)," a 1447 painting that
Ahn Gyeon created for Joseon Prince Ahnpyeong, is designated Japan's national
treasure and is on display at the central library of Tenri University in Japan.
The university has verbally agreed to loan the painting to the National Museum of
Korea for an upcoming exhibition in September commemorating the museum's 100th
anniversary, officials said. It will be the first local display of the painting
since 1996.
The painting, depicting Ahn Gyeon's dream, is considered one of the most
representative artworks of the Joseon Dynasty with several replicas produced over
the past decades. It was found in 1893 in Kagoshima, Japan, and purchased by
Tenri University in the early 1950s.
The National Museum of Korea also plans to bring in other Korean cultural assets
from overseas for the exhibition which will run from Sept. 27 through Dec. 16 in
central Seoul.
