Al-Sharq, The Peninsula Calls for Israel's Nuclear Capabilities be Subject to IAEA Inspection

Doha, June 13 (QNA) - In their editorials on Sunday, Al-Sharq and The Peninsula newspapers called on Israel to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regarding its nuclear capabilities, and to open its atomic reactors to inspectors. The papers stressed the importance of Israel's commitment to international laws and agreements and UN resolutions that arrange specific obligations out of the legal and moral responsibility of the member states. Al-Sharq said that Arab countries, including the State of Qatar, have maintained a firm position in all international forums, which calls for the Middle East to be free of nuclear weapons, and for this purpose, Qatar and the rest of the Arab countries joined the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and adopted and agreed to all international resolutions calling for the Middle East to be free of nuclear weapons, while the occupying power refuses to engage in these efforts. The paper stressed that the State of Qatar supports the goal of nuclear disarmament in accordance with international agreements and United Nations resolutions, and strongly supports the rule of law in international relations, as a basic guarantee for creating a peaceful and stable international environment that enhances opportunities for sustainable development for all peoples. The paper noted HE Qatar's Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Austria, and its Permanent Representative to the United Nations and international organizations in Vienna Sultan bin Salmeen Al Mansouri's affirmation in front of the session of the IAEA Board of Governors held in Vienna, during the discussion of Israeli nuclear capabilities item, that the recent Israeli aggression on Gaza, and the excessive and disproportionate use of force against civilians and the destruction of civilian infrastructure, angered world public opinion and raised fundamental questions about whether Israel behaves as a responsible state and uses its weapons in accordance with the rules of international law, and if there are guarantees that Israel will not use its weapons in an irresponsible way in the future, including the terrifying possibility of using nuclear weapons. In conclusion, Al-Sharq said that subjecting all Israeli nuclear facilities to the comprehensive IAEA's safeguards system is an important confidence-building gesture among all countries in the region and a step towards consolidating peace and security in the region. For its part, The Peninsula newspaper denounced in its editorial Sunday the double standard mechanism in implementing global agreements, pointing out that the policies related to the implementation of preventing the spread of nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction are not implemented in a fair way. The Qatari daily said that Israel is still immune to implementing these resolutions and its nuclear program as well is specifically directed to the surrounding Arabs and entire Islamic countries. The implementation of Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) seems to be not popular among people in the Middle East, as people see it being used for political purposes to serve the interests of the super powers and their close allies, the paper stated, noting that Qatar calls for Israel's commitment to international law and that its nuclear capabilities be subject to inspection. The newspaper underlined that the State of Qatar stressed in front of the session of the IAEA Board of Governors the importance of Israel cooperating with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regarding its nuclear capabilities and to open its atomic reactors to inspectors. HE Qatar's Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Austria, and its Permanent Representative to the United Nations and international organizations Sultan bin Salmeen Al Mansouri stressed that Qatar strongly supports the rule of law in international relations, as a basic guarantee for creating a peaceful and stable international environment that enhances opportunities for sustainable development for all peoples, the paper added. The Qatari daily said that HE Sultan bin Salmeen Al Mansouri pointed out that all Arab countries joined the NPT and adopted and agreed to all international resolutions calling for the Middle East to be free of nuclear weapons, while Israel continuously refuses to engage in these efforts. In conclusion, The Peninsula stressed the importance of all countries' commitment to international law especially Israel, which uses all kinds of weapons to oppress the Palestinians. (QNA)
