BN SUPREME COUNCIL TO FIND SOLUTION TO STATE OF PERAK CRISIS
KUALA LUMPUR, May 12 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Najib Razak described the High Court decision on the northern state of Perak Chief Minister issue Monday, which did not favour the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN or National Front)), as not the end of the road for the party.
Najib, who is also the United Malays National Organisation (Umno) president,
said this was because there was still room for the party to think of appropriate
measures to tackle the problem.
"This is not the end of the road. There is still room to think of
appropriate action. My colleagues in the Supreme Council (MT) and I will think
deeply on what is the best for Umno and the BN that we love," he said at the
63rd Umno anniversary celebration at the Putra World Trade Centre, here Monday
night.
He said the court decision was not the first upset for Umno because as a
political party, it had gone through numerous challenges throughout its history
including several court decisions that did not favour the party.
"In the history of Umno, we have been slapped with a court decision that
banned the party, but we rose again with Umno Baru and I believe the same spirit
must be with us (in facing the political crisis in Perak)," he said.
The Kuala Lumpur High Court on Monday declared Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin
from the Opposition coalition as the legitimate Perak Menteri Besar (Chief
Minister) as there had been no vacancy in the post and there was no vote of
no-confidence passed against him at the State Assembly sitting.
Describing the Umno anniversary celebration, which should have been a joyous
occasion, as rather lustreless following the court decision, Najib however was
happy to see that the Merdeka Hall was filled with Umno and BN supporters
including the presence of former Umno president and prime minister Dr Mahathir
Mohamad and wife, Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali.
"This is our family and on the strength of this family, we will will draw up
our plans, we will not be disheartened. We know that we have to shoulder the
people's trust and will not neglect the deeds contributed by the past leaders.
"They are hoping for us to continue the Umno struggle. InsyAllah (God
Willing), we will not only continue (the struggle), but take Umno to greater
heights," he said.
Earlier, Najib and Umno members performed the maghrib and isyak prayers and
read the 'Yaasin', before delivering his message followed by the cutting of
the 'pulut kuning' or yellow glutinous rice in conjunction with the Umno
anniversary.
Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, the three Umno
vice-presidents Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, Mohd Shafei Apdal and Dr Ahmad Zahid
Hamidi, heads of the Umno wings and leaders of the BN component parties.
Najib said Umno could not just rely on nostalgia and its past glory but must
be bold to transform and be prepared to learn from past experience to enable it
to be stronger and more successful.
Under the 1Malaysia concept, there would be transformation but they were
nothing new because such changes had been carried out by past Umno leaders
including the party's founder, the late Onn Jaafar who had opened the Umno
membership to the other ethnic groups, but did not succeed at that time.
A similar concept was also introduced by the first prime minister Tunku
Abdul Rahman through the formation of the Alliance, the second prime minister,
Abdul Razak enlarged the Alliance into Barisan Nasional (BN), Dr Mahathir
Mohamad had come up with the concept of the Malaysian Race while Abdullah Ahmad
Badawi had his national mission.
"Meanwhile, the 1Malaysia concept is based on the Constitution and the
'Rukun Negara' and realising that we are a nation of various races, Umno's
success depends on the support of the Malays and the partners in the BN," he
said, stressing that with the spirit of togetherness, the BN would gain new
strength to face the challenges.
He said the people no longer wanted to listen to speeches which were merely
rhetoric but wanted to see changes and achievements made in the interest of the
country.
UMNO is the dominant party in Malaysia's ruling National Front, and has been
in power since independence in 1957.
