Al-Raya: Qatar is Pioneer in Protecting Women's Rights

Doha, July 06 (QNA) - Al-Raya newspaper affirmed in its editorial Tuesday that women in the State of Qatar enjoy rights guaranteed by the constitution, which stipulates the principle of equality between all citizens in rights and duties without discrimination. The paper said that that women in Qatar were able to prove their abilities in education and leadership positions, preserving their position in society and their wide presence in various fields. The State of Qatar has put in place a complete protection system represented in enacting appropriate legislation and establishing specialized institutions such as Protection and Social Rehabilitation Center (AMAN), which is concerned with spreading awareness and education, providing protection and rehabilitation for women and children who are victims of violence and family breakdown, and reintegrating them into the society. In this regard, the newspaper noted that Qatar's renewal of its firm position on the importance of empowering families and enhancing their role to support the full enjoyment of their rights by all its members, especially women and girls with disabilities, confirms Doha's keenness and leadership to protect women's rights and enhance their position in society. The newspaper pointed out that this confirmation came in the speech of the State of Qatar delivered by Advisor to the Permanent Delegation of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Office in Geneva Johara Al Suwaidi, during the discussion on violence against women and girls with disabilities, an annual full-day discussion on the human rights of women at the Human Rights Council. Al-Raya said that in addressing such vital issues, Qatar calls for radical solutions to uproot these problems and limit their recurrence in the future, while drawing a road map for the solution so that everyones desire and will for implementation remains the line between solving the problem fundamentally or turning to temporary solutions that waste time, effort and resources. The newspaper considered that Qatar's position was embodied in Johara Al Suwaidi's assertion that eliminating violence against women and girls requires identifying the causes and roots of this violence, and working to address it, starting with changing the prevailing stereotypical view of women, recognizing their great role in the family and society, empowering them by providing early education opportunities, encouraging them to continue with it and developing their abilities and skills, and then adopting policies and enacting legislation that protect them from manifestations of violence, and provide them with means of recovery and integration if they are exposed to violations or abuses. Al-Raya concluded its editorial by referring to the Protection and Social Rehabilitation Center (AMAN) in Qatar, which constitutes a realistic model for dealing with these issues, as it provides specialized services for protection from violence, such as "Help me" service that is directed at protecting children and reporting abuse against them, and "Consult me" service which provides social counseling, psychological, and legal services for women. There are also 34 specialized agencies working to provide services to people with disabilities, including women and girls. (QNA)
