PRESIDENT INSPECTS WOC 2009 VENUE IN MANADO
Manado, May 13 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono inspected the venue of the World Ocean Conference 2009 (WOC 2009) at the Grand Kawanua Convention Center (GKCC) here on Wednesday afternoon.
The head of state made the inspection in the company of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Freddy Numberi.
Before making the inspection, President Yudhoyoyono dedicated the GKCC by planting a tree in its yard in the company of First Lady Ani Yudhoyhono.
After planting the tree, the president gave directives to WOC organizing committee members.
The head of state is scheduled to officially open the WOC at 9 local time on Thursday morning at the GKCC Grand Ballroom-3.
Yudhoyono would ceremonially mark the start of the WOC by playing a few notes on the Tetengkoren, a traditional North Sulawesi musical instrument, and also sign a special series of WOC-2009 stamps.
On the occasion, the president would be accompanied by Coordinating Minister for the People's Welfare Aburizal Bakries, Communication and Information Minister Muhammad Nuh, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Freddy Numberi, and North Sulawesi Governor SH Sarundajang.
After opening the WOC, President Yudhoyono would hold a bipartite meeting with the Papua New Guniean prime minister and then visit a marine-related exhibition at the Sulut Expo in the Kayu Watu area.
Then at 7.45 p.m. on Thursday, the president and First Lady Ani Yudhoyono would host a banquet for the foreign heads of state/government participating in the CTI.
Environmentalists expressed hope that the WOC 2009 would raise the marine issue in the agenda of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in Copenhagen in December this year.
They also hope the Manado Ocean Declaration (MOD) would be an interstate political agreement to struggle of marine issue in the other international conventions.
The World Ocean Conference in Manado would be attended by thousands of participants from 121 countries, including crown prince from Britain and the Netherlands, former US Vice President Al Gore, and UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon.
Other international NGOs such as USAID, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), World Wide Foundation (WWF), The Nature Conservancy (TNC), Conservancy International (CI), and UNESCO are also invited to attend the event.
