Hydropower development keys for leaving least developing status

(KPL) Lao government believed the development in hydropower and mining sectors is a main important potential contributes to the socio-economic development of the country and graduate from the least developing status by 2020, said Minister to Prime Minister’s Office, Mr Cheuang Sombounkhanh during the meeting held yesterday.
“Due to the recent development in hydro and mining sectors in Laos was mainly driven by Laos’ abundant natural resources,” he said.
It is the first time that the meeting on Consultative Process on National Resources Management and Sustainable Development held in Vientiane Capital.
The meeting was co-chaired by Minister to Prime Minister’s Office, Mr Cheuang Sombounkhanh, World Bank Country Manager, Mr Patchamuthu Illangovan.
He said that over the past years hydropower has played a rapidly growing role, especially the mining also emerged as a major driver of growth and public revenue.
In the past two decades, we have witnessed vigorous changes in the country leading to the achievement of several development goals, at the same time we see the emergence of new challenges. “We need to maximize the positive changes and minimize the negative changes by taking note of the lessons,” said Mr Cheuang.
He continued that this would require the Government of Laos to enhance its capacity, strengthen its governance, and respond to changing priorities, adapt to emerging development changes, and align our goals with the priorities.
The development of this report with emphasis on Natural Resource Management for Sustainable Development is clearly aligned Government’s objective, emphasized Minister Cheuang.The consultative process provided a vital platform for Government and Development partners to understand the challenges in managing natural resources, and to exam the linkages among natural resource use, macro-economic stability and social inclusion through analytical studies, researches and policy dialogues.
He said that the process is expected to culminate in the first Lao PDR Development Report later this year.
World Bank Country Manager Mr Illangovan said, the consultative process was held with aim to suggest the way forward to shape the country’s policy on natural resources and to ensure that the benefits from growth and natural resources are equally shared among different groups of the society as well as the future generations.
