Myanmarese in Japan protest Myanmar's latest charges on Suu Kyi+

TOKYO, May 14 Kyodo - About 150 Myanmarese living in Japan gathered outside the gates of the Myanmar Embassy in Tokyo on Thursday to protest against the country's ruling junta charging pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi with violating the terms of her restrictions, a move they believe to be aimed at extending her detainment that
was to end May 27.

Members of various organizations comprising Myanmarese and their Japanese
supporters rallied, chanting ''Free, free Aung San Suu Kyi'' for about an hour
in Burmese, English and Japanese, while holding up portraits of Suu Kyi and
banners that said, ''Stop oppressing civilians by unjust justice system.''
''I was angered by the inhumane actions taken by the junta,'' said 42-year-old
Lin Aung, vice president of the National League for Democracy Japan Branch, who
took part in the demonstration. ''We believe that the junta is trying to give
her another long sentence on some pretext or other.''
The demonstrators also urged the embassy to explain about the situation, but
its gates remained shut.
The 63-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner, who has been kept under home arrest
since 2003, was reportedly suffering from low blood pressure and dehydration
last week. She was taken from home early Thursday in relation to an
unauthorized visit by an American man and was being detained at the Insein
Prison in Yangon.
''We're worried about her health condition,'' said 39-year-old Phone Myint Tun,
who served as Suu Kyi's bodyguard from 1988 to 1989. ''It's not like she
invited the man herself. It's the security's fault that the man entered her
house.''
Suu Kyi is banned from meeting foreigners under a restrictions order. She could
face up to five years of imprisonment if found guilty in a trial, according to
her lawyer.
The group read out a statement of protest that also urged the international
community to take appropriate actions against the junta over the detainment of
Suu Kyi.
The members said they will gather again on Friday to demonstrate and also
submit the statement to the embassy.
