RI PRESIDENT URGED TO HELP MYANMAR`S SUU KYI

Jakarta, May 15 (ANTARA) - A number of Indonesian legislators grouped in the Asean Inter-Parliamentary Myanmar Caucus (AIPMC) have urged President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to take proactive steps to help Myanmar democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi in Yangon.

Two members of the group, Sidarto Danusubroto and Marzuki Darusman, said here Friday the AIPMC had written to the President asking him to obtain complete information on Suu Kyi's recent detention in Myanmar.

Suu Kyi was arrested last Thursday (May 14) and sent to Rangoon's Insien prison on the charge she had received a foreigner at her residence without permission from the authorities. Her alleged action was said to be a violation of Myanmar's state defense law which forbids Myanmar citizens to harbor foreigners without prior official permission.

Previously, Suu Kyi had already spent the last 13 years living as a Myanmar citizen under house arrest.

Sidarto said pressure from ASEAN parliamentarians was needed to make the Myanmar government initiate a democratization process in the country soon.

Indonesian parliamentarians want the Myanmar ruling junta to release not only Suu Kyi but all political prisoners. "Then, they should be rehabilitated so that a national reconciliation can happen before a peaceful solution is sought to Myanmar's problems," he said.

Marzuki Darusman said on the same occasion, Indonesia should show its leadership in ASEAN by not tolerating repressive measures against democracy in any country in the region.

"We as Indonesian parliamentarians want to see a reconciliation between the military junta, the opposition and the various ethnic groups in Myanmar," he said.

Another AIPM member, Eva Sundari, said ASEAN had so far been too lenient in its stance on anti-democratic developments in Myanmar.

"The US and European Union have already taken more advanced steps against Myanmar. ASEAN should adopt an even firmer stance than the US and the European Union on happenings in Myanmar," she said.

Sundari also said Suu Kyi's arrest by the military junta was reason for great concern because it had happened while Suu Kyi was not in good health. She was then reportedly suffering from low blood pressure and dehydration, she said. ***
