Bahrain attends high-level meeting on Afghanistan

Geneva, Sep.13 (BNA): Bahrain’s permanent delegation of the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva participated in the high-level ministerial conference on the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan.
This followed an invitation of the UN Secretary-General and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), António Guterres. The event was held today at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.
The drive was within the framework of the United Nations and the international community’s work in solidarity with the Afghan people, highlighting the remaining gaps and challenges, mobilizing support for the urgent appeal and the humanitarian response plan.
Bahrain presented a national statement delivered by the Plenipotentiary Permanent Representative to UN, Ambassador Dr. Yousuf AbdulKarim Bucheeri, who affirmed the Kingdom’s solidarity with the Afghan people.
He urged work to achieve their hopes and aspirations and give priority to their interests to achieve stability and security, while fully adhering to the provisions of international humanitarian law, which necessitates the international community to double the responsibility to extend a helping hand and humanitarian support to the Afghan people.
Dr. Yousuf Bucheeri expressed the Kingdom of Bahrain’s attaching special importance to the consolidation of humanitarian solidarity, as the Kingdom continued its contributions alongside its international partners in supporting relief efforts in Afghanistan, by facilitating evacuations and allowing flights to the scheduled final destinations.
He pointed out that Gulf Air operated the first evacuation flight to the United States of America as part of the evacuation operations from Afghanistan.
He indicated that Bahrain sent four relief shipments, all of which contained the necessary medical, food and relief materials to help alleviate the suffering that the Afghan people are going through during the current period.
Dr. Bucheeri concluded his statement by stressing the importance of continuing humanitarian solidarity with the Afghan people by extending a helping hand to Afghanistan to restore its security and stability in order to achieve the hopes and aspirations of the Afghan people and protect their rights.
