Speaker stresses Bahrain's commitment to strengthening democracy

Manama, Sept. 14 (BNA): Speaker Fawzia bint Abdullah Zainal has commended Bahrain's democracy, public freedoms and human rights successes during the comprehensive development process launched by HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa that have been applauded by global organizations and the international community. She highlighted Bahrain's achievements accomplished thanks to the great support by HM the King to the parliament that has had positive effects for the democratic process in the Kingdom. Bahrain has adopted the lofty principles that enhance the objectives of the state of law and institutions and build modern constitutional foundations that are reflected in the constitutional amendments emanating from the National Action Charter, the milestone for a new era of sweeping political reforms and modern democratic life, she said. In a statement on the International Day of Democracy, Zainal stressed that the government, led by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, has devoted major efforts to creating the atmosphere for the implementation of the royal directives and the success of HM the King's reforms. Bahrain has been successful in confronting the COVID-19 pandemic and in enhancing the values of democracy, enabling the nation to move forward towards more comprehensive development and wider achievements in all health, economic, social and other fields, which makes it a role model in protecting and preserving rights and freedoms in various circumstances, she said. Zainal affirmed that the parliament is keen to enhance democratic values and principles, especially those related to public freedoms, responsible freedom of opinion and expression, human rights, and democratic development, she added. Celebrated around the world on September 15 each year, the International Day of Democracy was established through a resolution passed by the UN General Assembly in 2007, encouraging governments to strengthen and consolidate democracy.
