TV STATIONS MUST GET APPROVAL FROM MCMC - RAIS

KUALA KLAWANG (Malaysia), May 16 (Bernama) -- Information, Communication
and Culture Minister Dr Rais Yatim said parties wishing to operate television
(TV) and radio stations must get approval from the Malaysian Communications and
Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

"Those who operate without valid licence are breaking the law. I will ask
MCMC to investigate this matter. This country is based on the rule of law that
must be followed by all," he told reporters after a dialogue session with
community leaders here Friday.

Rais said this when asked to comment on a newspaper advertisement by TVS
(state of Selangor news portal) Thursday looking to recruit news readers and
comperes.

He added the ministry would study the Malaysian Communications and
Multimedia Commission Act and take necessary action as the law applies to all
and that there were no exceptions.

"Article 8 of the Malaysian Constitution states that everyone is equal under
the law."

Rais said the ministry has yet to receive reports on the existence of the
illegal TV and radio station.
