TRAFFIC ACCIDENT LEADS TO DISCOVERY OF 21 AFGHAN ALIENS
Pekanbaru, Indonesia, May 15 (ANTARA) - A fatal traffic accident involving a public bus and a motorcycle on the road linking Riau and North Sumatra provinces earlier this week led to the discovery of 21 illegal Afghan immigrants in the bus.
The bus hit a motor cycle at a point known as Kilometer 7, killing the motor cycle rider while none of its passenegrs was hurt, local police said.
Senior Commissioner Rohmad Nur Sahid, head of the Rohil police, said when police came to the spot of the accident and questioned the bus passengers about what had happened, they found the Afghan illegal immigrants among them.
"If the accident had not happened, we would probably not have found the Afghan aliens," Sahid said.
The Afghans proved not to be carrying any immigration documents like passports nor good-conduct certificates so that they had to be detained, he said.
During preliminary questioning, the Afghans claimed they had left their country to escape the ongoing war there.
They had set foot on Indonesian territory after a boat trip from Malaysia. After disembarking in Tanjung Balai, Asahan, North Sumatra, they took a public bus in Medan to go to Jakarta.
"They wanted to come to Jakarta to meet officials of the United Nations High Commissiner for Refugees (UNHCR). While they were still in Afghanistan, they had heard Indonesia had a special shelter for refugees and that in Indonesia it was easy to get work without possessing immigration documents," Sahid said.
The 21 Afghans would eventually be handed over to the immigration office in Bagan Siapiapi in Rokan Hilir district.
Sahid identified the 21 Afghans as Muhammad Hakim (21), Sayid Ayaz Hassan (18), Sayid M. Hadi (21), Muhammad Zia (17), Khaliq DAD (20), Didar Ali (39), Muhammad Hussain (26), Muhammad Mustafa (17), Latif (27), Muhammad Nabi (32), Joma khan (18), Hussian Hussaini (40), Abdul Ali (18), Qadir Ali (50), Liyaqat (16), Ahmad Farid (35), Farzana (30), Muhammad Mossa (16), Hadi (40), Nabi (56), and Ahmad (34).
The 21 Afghans nabbed on Thursday had brought the number of illegal Afghan immigrants detained in Riau province over the past two years to 71.***
