S. Korea to tighten security against cyber attacks
SEOUL, May 18 (Yonhap) -- South Korea will tighten measures against cyber attacks
on its financial and economic policymaking bodies in a bid to stem the leak of
valuable information, officials said Monday.
The government will set up a cyber security center earlier next year which will
be in charge of monitoring any attempts by hackers to infiltrate databases of the
Finance Ministry, the Bank of Korea or the National Tax Service, according to the
ministry officials.
"We plan to set aside money to establish a cyber security center earlier next
year which will play a comprehensive role of defending the nation's financial and
economic agencies against hackers," a high-ranking official said on condition of
anonymity.
The move comes in the wake of news reports that hackers attempted to attack the
intranet of the finance ministry in February, raising concerns that valuable data
held by the nation's top economic policymaking body might have been leaked.
The ministry said that it has found no serious data leakage, adding that an
investigation is still underway.
