COURT HEARS 16 ELECTION-RELATED LAWSUITS ON MONDAY

Jakarta, May 18 (ANTARA) - The Constitutional Court (MK) heard 16 cases of lawsuits on Disputes of General Elections Results (PHPU) here on Monday.

The MK said its Monday's hearing was the first it was holding on disputes on the results of the recent legislative elections conducted on April 9, 2009.

In the first court session, the MK dealt with most lawsuits filed by candidates of Regional Representatives Council (DPD), namely 12 cases from, among others, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, Papua, East Java, and Lampung.

The MK also dealt with lawsuits filed by three political parties, namely the Indonesian Love Democracy Party (PKDI), the Indonesian Youth Democracy (PPI) and the Indonesian Democracy Upholders Party (PPDI).

PKDI filed a lawsuit because some 20 of its votes were lost. The PPI meanwhile was convinced it had some 3,010 votes disappeared in three districts of Cirebon (West Java), South Minahasa (North Sulawesi) and North Tapanuli (North Sumatra).

In the meantime, PPDI filed objections to a local General Elections Commission (KPUD)'s decision on the results of the vote count results.

The Constitutional Court has received a total of 71 cases of disputes over the results of the April 9 2009 legislative elections which consisted of 42 lawsuits filed by political parties and 29 lawsuits from individual Regional Representative Council candidates.***
