VP ORDERS SPEEDY COMPLETION OF EAST FLOOD CANAL PROJECT

Jakarta, May 18 (ANTARA) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla has ordered the executors of the East Flood Canal (BKT) project to work faster and complete their task at the end of the year at the latest.

"The project should be finished at the end of the year, or sooner, if possible," the vice president said during an inspection of the project in the Duren Sawit area in East Jakarta, on Monday.

He said if the project could be finished soon it could minimize the extent of floods that often took place in east Jakarta.

"We hope that the BKT project will be able to reduce flooding in Jakarta," the vice president said. During the inspection the vice president was accompanied by Public Works Minister Joko Kirmanto, People's Housing Minister Yusuf Asy'ari and Jakarta Deputy Governor Prijanto.

When he arrived at the location, Kalla inspected a bridge of the project which had been completed. The vice president also questioned the fact that there were still electricity networks along the lane of the BKT project.

During the inspection, the vice president got information from the Ciliwung-Cisadane River Project head Pitoyo who explained the hurdles still faced in the development of the project such as land clearance problems, toll road tracks and electricity networks.

But so far, state-owned electricity company has permitted the removal of the electricity networks which passed the lane of the flood canal project.

Pitoyo said that the BKT flood canal project encircled at least 156 sq kilometers of areas.

The East Flood Canal is expected to flow the water of at least five rivers, namely the rivers of Cipinang, Sunter, Jati Karang, Cakung and Bekasi.

After inspecting the east flood canal project in East Jakarta, the vice president headed to South Jakarta to inspect the construction of the Kalibata Modest Flat (rusunami) project in Kalibata area. ***
