FINNISH INVESTORS UPBEAT ON ECONOMIC GROWTH IN ASIA, M`SIA
By Tengku Noor Shamsiah Tengku Abdullah
KUALA LUMPUR, May 18 (Bernama) -- Finnish investors from mutual pension
insurance company, Ilmarinen and Pohjola AM, one of the biggest asset managers
in Finland, believe Malaysia has more economic potential and growth prospects.
Mikko Mursula, Head of Listed Securities of Ilmarinen Mutual Pension
Insurance Company, said: "We see more potential and growth opportunities in Asia
just like other regions."
"We've been feeling quite positive about the region as a whole. One of the
reasons is the stronger growth prospects compared to how it looks in
Europe or in the United States," he told Bernama after a luncheon hosted by
Finland Ambassador to Malaysia Tapio Saarela.
Mursula and Managing Director of Pohjola Asset Management Ltd, Mikko
Koskimies, are here as part of their week-long fact-finding mission to Asia.
Malaysia is the second stop of their visit to Asia after Singapore before
proceeding to Hong Kong.
Mursula said they tried to gather macro-economic perspective to see how
Malaysia was doing.
Koskimies said Pohjola AM is the leading banking group in Finland and the
largest asset managers for Finnish institutions.
He said Finland is a small country with five million people but it has
substantial investments overseas.
"We manage 25 billion euro worth of Finnish assets invested worldwide,
including in Malaysia," he said.
On their visit, Koskimies said they had fruitful exchanges with bankers on
the state of the economy.
Saarela said there are about 50 Finnish companies operating in Malaysia.
"Some of them have made investments while others only have representative
offices. We're looking forward to diversify our existence here to
cover services like the financial sector," he said.
On Malaysia's decision to liberalise the financial services, Saarela said it
was a wise move taken in the right direction.
It would help woo more foreign investors to the country, he added.
