GREENPEACE INDONESIA PETITIONS PRESIDENT TO PROTECT FORESTS

Jakarta, May 18 (ANTARA)- Greenpeace Indonesia has sent a petition to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to impose a moratorium on forest felling in a bid to protect the country's forests.

Greenpeace's Southeast Asia campaigner, Joko Arif, referred to the petition during an Indonesian forest protection action rally at the National Monument (Monas) square here Monday.

The petition signed by some 60,000 Indonesians was conveyed to the president through the State Secretariat's letter organizing affairs bureau chief, Sri Haryati.

The government should immediately take firm measures to save the country's forests as part of its efforts to deal with climate change, protect the biological diversity as well as the rights of traditional people to live, he said.

Joko said the deforestation rate in Indonesia had reached five times the width of Bali Island annually or 1.8 million hectares per year, of the country's total forest areas of around 120.35 million hectares or as wide as four European countries comprising England, Germany, France and Findland.

The country's deforestation reachef five times the width of a soccer field every minute, he said.

According to him, Greenpeace Indonesia had urged the government to issue the moratorium on forest felling since two years ago but there had been no answer.
The petition was also supported by several artists such as Teuku Zaky, Julie Estelle and singer Krisna Mukti. ***
