Japan gives Houay Shay hybrid dam to Laos

(KPL) The 70 megawatt (MW) Houay Shay hydropower dam (Hybrid System was handed over to the Electricity Du Laos branch of Oudomsay province last week, after it had been functional for five years The Japanese government funded its construction with a USD $5 million grant.
The aim of its construction was to demonstrate the use of the hybrid system for producing electricity.
Vice-Head of Energy and Mines Services of Oudomsay, Mr. Vanhla Vongmany said that the local people residing in10 villages in Nga district were benefiting from the electricity generated by this dam, such as Ban Nakhok, Lerm, Houay Lieng, Houay Khan, Done An, Done Ngiew, Thin, Nongthao, Mueangnga and Houay Suay.
Meanwhile, Vice Head of Electricity du Laos branch of Oudomsay, Mr. Somkid Southivong disclosed that the total electrical generation of Houay Shay hybrid dam was inadequate for local consumption.
Concerning this problem, he said that Electricity Du Laos installed additional electricity network to get 22 kilovolt of electricity from two sources to this area, Nam Ngum dam in Luang Prabang province and Nam Kor dam in Oudomsay province.
The transmission line, 34 kilometer in length, was laid at a cost of 6.8 billion kip and it was paid by Lao government, said Mr. Somdid.
