MOUNT ANAK KRAKATAU EMITS SMOKE COLUMNS



Bandarlampung, May 19 (ANTARA) - Mount Anak Krakatau (GAK) emitted smoke columns up to a height of 500 meters on Tuesday (May 19) and produced eleven loud explosions since 08.00 a.m. to 12.30 noon local time, an observer said.

"Mount Anak Krakatau's activity has declined but it is still in a level III alert status," Andi Suwardi, head of the Mount Anak Karakatau monitoring post in Hargopancoran, Kalianda village, South Lampung, said here Tuesday.

The seismic tremors of the Mt Anak Krakatau in the Sunda strait only occurred twice with ten blasts.

Despite its declining activity, visitors and fishermen were asked not to get close to the GAK's location, he said.

Last month, based on data from monitoring instruments, the GAK'S number of eruptions reached 175 times, volcanic quakes 23 times and tremors 87 times.
