MINISTER WANTS BERNAMA'S REPUTATION BE SAFEGUARDED
KUALA LUMPUR, May 20 (Bernama) -- Bernama's reputation and good image as Malaysia's national news agency must be safeguarded in the quest for commercialisation, said Information, Communications and Culture Minister Dr Rais Yatim.
He said this must be done without adversely affecting Bernama, especially
when it had incurred losses.
"We will draw up measures to salvage the situation soonest possible," he
told reporters after visiting the news agency, here, Tuesday.
On the future of its two commercial entities, Bernama TV dan Radio24, Rais
said both were the government's effort to diversify news coverage in tandem with
developments taking place in the contemporary media.
"Bernama has managed to do that, but in any management there must be areas
or weaknesses that must be improved or overcome."
He said the ministry would scrutinise the achievements of the two commercial
entities before taking appropriate steps to protect Bernama's integrity and good
name.
Rais said the ministry would also give attention to improving the welfare of
Bernama staff, to be on par with those in the other agencies like RTM (Radio &
Television Malaysia), the government-owned public broadcasters, under the
ministry.
He said the government also appreciated the multi-tasking ability of Bernama
staff developed through the agency's training and not found in the other
departments.
Rais also reminded Bernama of its role in nation building, and now in line
with the 1Malaysia concept, by promoting good values through its news
presentation.
On the new media which were becoming increasingly influential, he said the
government took a positive stand, but would take legal action in they broke the
law after advice and cajoling were ignored.
On the proposed setting up of a national media council, Rais said if it came
into being, its role such as a peacemaker, must be clear.
