Songdo FEZ begins work to build global university campus

SEOUL, May 20 (Yonhap) -- South Korea has begun work to build a global university campus that could help transform South Korea into an educational hub for Northeast Asia, the government said Wednesday.

The Songdo Global University Campus (SGUC) being built at the Incheon Free
Economic Zone (FEZ) about 40 kilometers west of Seoul, will be home to six U.S.
schools that plan to open undergraduate level programs, the Ministry of Knowledge
Economy said.
The central government and Incheon city will spend 1.07 trillion won (US$854.2
million) up till 2012 to build the 650,000-square-meter campus that can
accommodate 12,000 studies and faculty.
The ministry in charge of the country's industrial policy and investment
promotion said the SGUC could help attract foreign students from neighboring
countries like Japan and China, allow local students to spend less money on
overseas education and help companies establish industrial cluster tie-ups with
these schools.
South Korea spent more than US$4.4 billion on overseas education and training
programs in 2008.
"If the schools opened they could help transform the country into an educational
hub for the region," a ministry official said, adding that the campus could
improve overall living conditions for foreigners that can help attract more
foreign direct investment.
Full-fledged construction work will begin in July with some schools to receive
students in September 2010.
State University of New York at Stony Brook, State University of North Carolina,
Delaware State University, University of Southern California, George Mason
University and the University of Missouri-Columbia will open collages at the
campus with three more schools to follow.
Students will be taught using the same curriculum as their peers studying in the
United States and receive the same diplomas. Plans are underway to offer these
student greater opportunities to take study courses in the United States.
Seoul said that it will offer broad incentives to schools that open branch
schools at the FEZ that include providing operating funds for these schools.
