Seoul shares open higher on steel, tech gains

SEOUL, May 20 (Yonhap) -- South Korean stocks started higher Wednesday as investors bought steel and tech exporters, analysts said.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) rose 0.53 points, or 0.04
percent, to 1,428.74 in the first 15 minutes of trading.
Major shares traded mixed, with gains in steelmaking giant POSCO and tech
bellwether Samsung Electronics sending the index higher.
The local currency was trading at 1,249.75 won to the U.S. dollar as of 9:15
a.m., down 0.25 won from Tuesday's close.
