Japan, China, S. Korea to hold summit in Tianjin in late Aug.
BEIJING, May 21 Kyodo -
Japan, China and South Korea agreed in principle on Thursday that a summit of
the three countries that China is hosting this year will take place in late
August in Tianjin, diplomatic sources from the three nations said.
While a specific date for the trilateral meeting has yet to be determined, the
countries are considering holding the talks either on Aug. 29 or 30, according
to the sources.
A meeting of the three countries' foreign ministers will be held in Beijing in
late July, ahead of the summit meeting, according to the sources.
Tianjin was chosen as the venue as Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao is from the
northern port city.
The trilateral summit, which had been held in the past on the sidelines of
meetings of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the three countries,
was separated from the ASEAN talks for the first time in December, when it was
held in Fukuoka, Japan.
Among the topics in the upcoming summit are expected to be ways to deal with
North Korea's nuclear programs after its announcement to pull out of the
six-party denuclearization talks, the global economic crisis and the new strain
of influenza that is affecting the world, according to the sources.
