M'SIA: SUBSIDY, INCENTIVE DISTRIBUTION METHODS TO BE REVISED
KOTA BAHARU (Malaysia), May 22 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian government will revise all methods of subsidy and incentive distribution for livestock breeders, farmers and fishermen to ensure that the aid given reaches the target groups.
Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Noh Omar said the move
was taken because there were still those who complained they had not received
aid from the government or that it was late.
According to him, the government had allocated subsidies and incentives
worth billions of ringgit for the people, but these sometimes benefited big
companies or groups who knew how to apply for the assistance.
"We give so much aid such as under the National Food Security Policy, where
farmers selling chicken, eggs, fish, vegetables or rice all get incentives.
"However, we still see those who sell 20kg of vegetables and breed fish in
two or three ponds not getting the incentives. I see most of it going to big
companies and certain individuals," he said.
Noh was speaking to reporters after a meeting with farmers in the Kemubu
Agriculture Development Authority (KADA) area at Ladang Merdeka Ismail, Mulong
Lating, in Kota Baharu, the capital city of East coast Kelantan state in
Peninsular Malaysia Thursday.
In another development, the ministry approved an application from fishermen
of Kuala Besar, near Kedai Buluh, here, to change the condition in the
fisherman's boat licence to allow them to use their boats during the rain
season.
Noh said the regulation would be changed and fishermen could use their boats
during the rainy season. Previously, they were required to have a special
licence for the boat's owner only.
"We can approve this request," he said answering a question from a
representative of the fishermen involved during a dialogue session held in
conjunction with his visit to the Kuala Besar Fisheries Complex, here, Thursday.
