INDEPENDENTS HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH BN IN PENANTI - PM
PEKAN (Malaysia), May 23 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak
said the Independent candidates contesting in the by-election for the Penanti
state seat in northern Penang state on May 31 have nothing to do with the ruling
Barisan Nasional (BN) or National Front.
The Prime Minister stressed that the Barisan Nasional had earlier come up
with a resolution not to contest in the by-election.
"I don't know the background of the (Independent) candidates but in terms of
policy, Umno and the Barisan Nasional are not fielding any candidate," he told
reporters after opening the 15th Annual General/Delegates Meeting of the
Malaysian Government Pensioners' Association (PPKM), in this east coast royal
town Saturday.
He said this when asked to comment on a company manager and former Youth
head of the Telok Wang, Penanti Gerakan branch, Nai-Khan Ari a/l Nai Keow, who
was confirmed as contesting as an Independent in the by-election.
The Penanti state by-election will see a four-cornered fight between a
candidate from the opposition Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) and three Independent
candidates.
Najib said: "We are not involved in the Penanti by-election because it is
deliberately held to resolve the (PKR) internal problems and it is also one of
their political games."
Asked about the possibility of certain groups linking the Independent
candidate concerned with the BN, Najib said: "It's not necessary that the
candidate should be linked to the Gerakan party, if so, we will have to look
first at what the whole thing is really about."
Najib again emphasised that the BN would not be involved at all in the
Penanti by-election.
"We are not involved in the campaign for any particular candidate. We will
not send our people to campaign and so on," he said.
On the vacancy in the Manek Urai state seat in northeast state of Kelantan,
following the death of its incumbent Assemblyman Ismail Yaacob, 60, on Friday,
Najib said the BN would field a candidate in the by-election later.
"We wait for the proposal from the Kelantan (Umno) Liaison (Body) first. I
had said Friday that the Manek Urai seat fell vacant because its Assemblyman had
died and this means that it is required under the federal constitution that the
seat be filled by someone else, so the BN will field a candidate," he said.
