NIHR Chairman participates in conference on international solidarity, SDGs

Cairo, Mar. 1 (BNA): Chairman of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), Ali Ahmed Al-Derazi, has participated in a conference on International Solidarity and Sustainable Development Agenda 2030 — Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. Representatives of the members of the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions, the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, in addition to the United Nations Development Programme, participated in the two-day international event, held in Cairo. The conference discussed the inter-relations between international solidarity and the implementation of the sustainable development goals, especially Goal 16. It also discussed the procedures related to strengthening the role of national institutions in protecting human rights, enabling them to implement and follow up on the implementation of the sustainable development goals, and encouraging international cooperation and solidarity to revitalise the implementation of the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030. Al-Derazi expressed hope that the conference will come up with recommendations and a plan of action to follow up on their implementation through a working group formed by competent stakeholders. The panel will guide the national human rights institutions in cooperating among themselves, as well as in enhancing their role and assuming their responsibilities in order to continue implementing the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. About 250 participants, including representatives from the Arab League, the Arab Parliament, Egypt, the host country, statistics institutions and organisations, parliamentarians, human rights institutes, international and national human rights organisations, civil society organisations, academic institutions, and development partners, took part in the international event.
