EU CONDEMNS NORTH KOREA'S NUCLEAR TEST

KUALA LUMPUR, May 25 (Bernama) -- The European Union Monday condemned the
nuclear weapon test conducted by North Korea, stressing that such a move further
threatened regional peace and security in North East Asia.

Its High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP)
Javier Solana said that the act was a flagrant violation of the United Nations
(UN) Security Council Resolution.

North Korea's second nuclear test staged Monday further threatened regional
peace and security in North East Asia, after its launch of a long-range missile
in April this year, he said in a statement to Bernama.

Solana pointed out that these irresponsible acts by North Korea warranted a
firm response by the international community.

"The European Union will be in contact with its partners to discuss
appropriate measures," he said.

North Korea's second nuclear test was conducted less than three
years after it stunned the world by testing an atomic bomb in October 2006.

Following its announcement of the second successful underground nuclear
test, North Korea was bombarded with a wave of international criticism, with
neighbours Japan and South Korea demanding an emergency session of the UN
Security Council.
