Japan gives scholarships to 25 Lao government officials

(KPL) The Japanese government yesterday approved 297 million Japanese Yen or ( US$ 3 million) to the Lao government for sending 25 young Lao government officials to study in Japanese higher education institutions.
At the signing ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the agreement was signed between Ambassador of Japan to Laos, Mr Masaaki Miyashita and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Phongsavath Boupha .Twenty-five students would be reading for their masterates for two years on a wide range of subjects, developing economics, education, law, agriculture and engineering under the Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS).
The main aim of this scheme is to build the capacity of young Lao government officials.
Mr. Miyashita said that, Japan gives a high priority to human resource development of Laos, reflected in its Official Development Assistance Policy, so as to spur the socio-economic development process of Laos.
The importance of basic education is unquestionable, but higher education is equally important, as the country needs highly skilled people in designing and planning national development.Over the past10 years, 200 Lao students studied in Japan and most of them read masterate courses.
