Newspapers Highlights Qatar's Firm Belief That There is No Alternative to Constructive Dialogue
Doha, March 15 (QNA) - In their editorials on Tuesday, Qatari newspapers stressed that constructive dialogue is the most effective way to end the crisis between Russia and Ukraine, especially since this crisis continues to affect the humanitarian situation.
The newspapers pointed out that the State of Qatar has called and is still calling for constructive dialogue and diplomatic methods for a more secure and stable world in which everyone lives in peace.
In this regard, the newspapers noted the meeting between HE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani with HE Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov. During the meeting, they discussed the latest developments in the crisis between Russia and Ukraine, in addition to exchanging views on several regional matters and issues of common interest.
In its editorial, Al-Raya newspaper said that there is no alternative to constructive dialogue and diplomatic methods for settling international disputes by peaceful means. This was confirmed by HE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs during his talks yesterday in Moscow. Qatar believes that the escalation between Russia and Ukraine is detrimental to the whole world, the newspaper said, adding that there is an opportunity to resolve the crisis peacefully and through the principles of international law that stress the need to ensure the safety of civilians.
The newspaper pointed that the State of Qatar is keen on the United Nations Charter and the well-established principles of international law, including obligations under the Charter to settle international disputes by peaceful means, refrain from the threat or use of force, adhere to the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of states, and reject and condemn all that is contrary to that. In this regard, His Excellency affirmed that the State of Qatar will spare no effort to provide everything that would support a peaceful solution to the Russian-Ukrainian crisis through consultation and work with its partners.
Al-Raya called on both Russia and Ukraine to take advantage of the international momentum calling for a peaceful solution to the crisis, away from military escalation, warning that what is happening there is likely to ignite a series of global crises at a time when the world is striving to get out of the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has harmed countries and global economy.
The newspaper added that if there are diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis through dialogue, the State of Qatar will be at the forefront of countries to end the escalation. In this context, HE the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs indicated that he briefed HE the Russian Foreign Minister on the results of his recent meetings and contacts with foreign ministers of European countries, stressing the need for urgent international efforts to reach a peaceful solution to the crisis, with the need to ensure the safety of civilians.
The newspaper stated that the Qatari efforts in support of resolving the crisis between Russia and Ukraine peacefully were praised and welcomed by Moscow, when the Russian Foreign Minister expressed his country's appreciation for the interest of HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani in resolving this crisis, pointing out that Qatar seeks to benefit from its relations to find consensus on the current situation and ways to ensure international peace and security while considering the interests of all parties.
Al-Raya concluded its editorial by saying that Qatar will continue its efforts to support peaceful solutions to crises, including the escalation between Russia and Ukraine.
For its part, Al-Sharq newspaper said that the State of Qatar is seeking to support the existing international efforts to provide the necessary conditions for a peaceful solution to the Ukrainian crisis, as Qatar reaffirmed its position on constructive dialogue to resolve the current conflict and not to take what would lead to further escalation, pointing out that Qatar is intensifying its diplomatic methods to advance the Ukrainian-Russian negotiations, ease tensions and ensure the safety of civilians as a top priority.
In this context, the paper indicated that the visit of HE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani to Moscow, where he assured his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, that the State of Qatar will spare no effort to provide everything that would support a peaceful solution to the Russian-Ukrainian crisis through consultation and work with its partners.
The newspaper pointed out that HE affirmed that the State of Qatar has always believed in diplomatic solutions to international crises and in maintaining the international system based on respect for the Charter of the United Nations and the well-established principles of international law, including the obligations under the Charter to settle international disputes by peaceful means, refrain from the threat or use of force, and adhere to the sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of states, as well as reject and condemn everything to the contrary.
Concluding, Al-Sharq said that Qatari efforts continue to bring peace to Ukraine, stressing that Qatar attaches the highest priority to protecting civilians, and avoiding human losses and damage to infrastructure. Through its diplomatic channels, Qatar also warns of the seriousness of the difficult humanitarian situation that will face millions of refugees in the event of continued escalation and tension, which requires the solidarity of the international community to develop emergency plans to respond to their necessary needs, the paper added.
For its part, Al-Watan newspaper highlighted HE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani's meeting with HE Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov in Moscow on Monday. The discussions dealt with the situation in Ukraine, the ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve this crisis, and a number of issues of joint interest.
The newspaper noted that since the beginning of the crises, Qatar affirmed that the peaceful mean is the only way to end crises, as well as the need for concerted efforts to resolve them urgently in accordance to Charter of the United Nations and the principles of international law, which was referenced by HE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani during discussions in Moscow.

Additionally, His Excellency said not to take any action that would lead to further escalation, and stressed the need to ensure the safety of civilians as a priority.

For its part, the Peninsula newspaper stressed in its editorial on Tuesday that Qatars stance on mediation and peaceful resolution has made it easy for countries to trust its unbiased stance, emphasizing that the ever-increasing number of international conflicts, their costs, complexity, and intractability demands that the world focus more on preventive diplomacy and mediation as a critical component of preventive diplomacy.
The newspaper said that the Qatari mediation played an important role in reaching the Doha Peace Agreement in Darfur, releasing Djiboutian prisoners of war in Eretria, and more recently aiding the peaceful transition in Afghanistan. In addition, Qatar continues to work toward reconciliation among the Palestinians.
The newspaper added that Qatar reiterated, in the wake of the Russia-Ukraine crisis, its commitment to a peaceful solution between the European nations. HE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani while meeting the Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov in Moscow, stated that Qatar has always believed in diplomatic solutions to international crises and in maintaining the international system based on respect for the Charter of the United Nations and the well-established principles of international law. The Peninsula concluded its editorial by noting that the Minister of Foreign Affairs' call comes as Russia and Ukraine agreed to continue their talks. Qatar stresses the importance of the role of the Security Council in its support of mediation and preventive diplomacy that the international community should consolidate, as many conflicts can only be solved through multilateral efforts.
