Doha Forum 2022: Forum Participants Anticipate The Profound Effects of Ukraine's War on Global System

Doha, March 27 (QNA) - Participants in the Doha Forum expected that the war in Ukraine would have profound effects on the global system at various political, economic and security levels. This took place at the session under the titled "Spheres of Influence in the Age of Unpeace." HE Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic Ivan Korcok, HE President of the World Economic Forum Borge Brende, and Member of the National Assembly of Pakistan and former Minister of Foreign Affairs Henna Rabbani Khar participated in a session. The participants believed that the war in Ukraine would have major repercussions, more than any other war the world has witnessed over the past two decades. The Slovak Foreign Minister said that at the European level, Russia is working to destroy the security architecture of the European continent, but this war leads to the strengthening of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which has become stronger and more present in Eastern Europe, as well as strengthening the unity of the West and increasing military spending in the field of defense at the European level in particular. He added that NATO will be more present in Eastern Europe, especially with countries expressing their desire to join the alliance. In the field of energy, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovakia explained that European countries are now trying to become more independent in this field, noting that his country, which is completely dependent on energy imports from Russia, is currently seeking to find other sources. For his part, the President of the World Economic Forum spoke of the high price that Russia would pay for this military escalation, and believed that the Russian economy would hit hard as European countries sought to dispense with Russian energy, which covered 40 percent of the continent's needs. He added that nuclear fuel, renewable energy and natural gas sources are now being talked about in Europe despite challenges in gas supply. He expected the coming years to experience global turmoil as a result of this military escalation, and hoped that it would not lead to separate the world and would not impede global growth, which had experienced an unprecedented surge in globalization. For her part, the former Pakistani Minister for Foreign Affairs said that the West had contributed to the division of the world and was taking responsibility for what had happened, after the role of the United Nations had been marginalized over the past two decades. She said that the war in Ukraine will have the greatest impact on the world, as it will lead to increased military spending, as well as its economic repercussions, on the European continent and other regions of the world. She added that this military intervention will have a high price to pay. All the military interventions that have taken place over the past two decades have cost the West nothing, but they have cost other regions of the world. The former Pakistani Minister for Foreign Affairs saw in this context that the crisis would create a global division, and China might also be a party to that division and perhaps other States, which would lead the world to an irreversible path. It is noteworthy that the Doha Forum, which is held under the slogan "Transforming For A New Era", which concludes later today, witnesses a wide global participation of leaders, intellectuals, policy makers and experts in press and media, who are discussing four main topics represented in geopolitical alliances and international relations, the financial system and economic development, defense and cybersecurity, food security, sustainability and climate change.
