CHINA REGARDS MALAYSIAN PM`S VISIT AS IMPORTANT

BY VINCENT LOW

BEIJING, May 27 (Bernama) -- China regards the forthcoming visit by
Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak on June 2 as an important
one as it will further enhance bilateral relations between the two countries.

Foreign Ministry spokeman Ma Zhaoxu said the visit would also deepen the
strategic cooperation between China and Malaysia and lift their relations to a
higher level.

He said Premier Wen Jiabao would welcome Najib at a ceremony and hold talks
with his Malaysian counterpart.

Najib will also pay a courtesy call on President Hu Jingtao, he told a press
conference here Tuesday.

Najib's visit coincides with the 35th anniversary of China-Malaysia
diplomatic ties, said Ma.

He said both leaders will exchange views on strengthening bilateral
relations, as well as discuss international and regional issues of common
interest.

Ma also disclosed that during Najib's visit, both leaders will sign a series
of agreements.

This will be Najib's first visit to China as Prime Minister.

Meanwhile in KUALA LUMPUR, Deputy Foreign Minister Lee Chee Leong had
said Najib's impending visit to China next month would open a new chapter in the
bilateral relations between Malaysia and China.

He said although relations between the two countries began some six
centuries ago, Malaysia's second prime minister Tun Abdul Razak Hussein had the
foresight to establish diplomatic relations with China in 1974.

Lee said the formalisation of bilateral relations, which started modestly,
had seen phenomenal growth in terms of strengthened relations and increased
trade, as well as people-to-people contact.

China's ambassador to Malaysia, Liu Jian had expressed his confidence that
Najib's forthcoming visit to China would see the dawn of a new era in bilateral
relations between the two countries.

Meanwhile Abdul Majid Khan, the Malaysia-China Friendship Association
(MCFA) president, said the visionary decision of Najib's father in 1974 had
brought about excellent friendly relations that Malaysia enjoyed with China
today.

Majid, who was Malaysia's ambassador to China some years ago, said Malaysia
and China shared common objectives of peace and development, and that relations
between the two countries could only grow stronger in the years to come.
