Al-Sharq: Yemen's Truce Step towards Achieving Lasting Peace, Launching National Dialogue

Doha, April 06 (QNA) - Al-Sharq newspaper said in its editorial Wednesday that the two-month truce in Yemen constitutes an important development in the Yemeni scene, after seven years of war that exhausted Yemenis, caused great loss of life and massive destruction of infrastructure, displaced hundreds of thousands of people and left famines and shortages of food and medicine, leading to a humanitarian situation that the United Nations classified as the worst in the world. This truce has brought hope to Yemenis, so that all parties move forward by working with the United Nations and partners to advance towards a comprehensive ceasefire, turn the truce into lasting peace and a comprehensive agreement by starting a national dialogue that ends the war, achieves the aspirations of the Yemeni people and guarantees the unity and sovereignty of the country, the paper said. It also provides a great opportunity to alleviate the human suffering of Yemenis, as the United Nations International Organization for Migration announced that more than 25.5 million Yemenis are now living below the poverty line, as a result of the repercussions of the war, the newspaper underlined. The paper referred to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs's announcement that millions of Yemenis do not have enough food during the holy month of Ramadan. The United Nations Children's Fund "UNICEF", the World Food Program and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) also warned that 17.4 million Yemenis are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance, including 2.2 million children suffering from acute malnutrition, the paper added. Al-Sharq concluded by saying that the opportunity offered by the current truce needs political will from all parties to turn it into a real opportunity to establish peace and ensure the participation of all in building a new Yemen that meets the aspirations of the people for security, peace and prosperity and enhances stability in the region.
