UPP SEIZES TIGER SKINS WORTH RM90,000

BUKIT KAYU HITAM (Malaysia), May 29 (Bernama) -- The Anti-Smuggling Unit (UPP)confiscated five tiger skins worth about RM90,000 and arrested two Thais at a roadblock at Km1.3 heading to Thailand Friday.

Kedah UPP commander Mohd Noor Idris said the tiger skins estimated to be
worth RM18,000 each were seized at 6.50am.

They were found wrapped in gray plastic at the back of a Honda Civic car
with Thai registration number plates in which the two men, aged 51 and 52, were
travelling.

"The tiger skins, measuring 2m by 0.6m, were believed to have been smuggled
from the forests of Perak and Kelantan," he told reporters here.

Mohd Noor said the tiger skins were believed to be for sale in Thailand at a
higher price.

The case would be handed over to the Wildlife and National Parks Department
for further investigation. (US$1=RM3.48)
