Bahrain’s commitment to reaching net zero by 2060 stressed

Manama, Jul 5 (BNA): Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Minister Wael bin Nasser Al Mubarak and Oil and Environment Minister, Special Envoy for Climate Affairs, Dr. Mohammed bin Mubarak bin Daina inspected mangroves nurseries. Al-Mubarak stressed unwavering efforts to expand green spaces and double the mangrove trees in order to reduce the effects of climate change and contribute to achieving Bahrain’s of reaching net zero by 2060. He underlined the importance of implementing the national afforestation strategy, highlighting plans to double mangroves in Bahrain to reach 3.6 million trees by 2035. “The plan is in compliance with Bahrain’s commitment to the goals of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26), which have been translated into a number of initiatives, including the expansion of mangrove cultivation”, he said. He stressed the ability of mangroves to absorb carbon dioxide equivalent to 4 to 5 times the trees, in addition to providing an important biological habitat for crustaceans and marine organisms, as well as for birds of all kinds. He unveiled the ministry’s ongoing plans to set up a number of specialized nurseries for the cultivation of mangroves to achieve the afforestation goals set out. The Oil and Environment Minister said that Bahrain has has developed integrated plans to adapt to the effects of climate change, in implementation of the declaration made by HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister at the 26th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26), which was held In Glasgow, UK in November 2022 He stressed Bahrain’s commitment to net zero by 2060, noting that Bahrain has adopted a number of initiatives to become carbon neutral, including quadrupling the mangrove trees. He highlighted national aims at increasing the number of trees in government projects and major industrial companies, providing policies supporting afforestation and encouraging individuals to participate in this drive. . He stressed nation-wide efforts to clean waterways, prune trees, and rehabilitate agricultural areas in the coasts and natural reserves such as Tubli Bay, Ras Sanad, Arad Reserve, and other important sites. The two ministers also paid a visit to Bahrain Petroleum Company (Bapco). They were briefed by Chief Executive Officer Dr. Abdulrahman Jawaheri about initiatives aimed to support sustainable development and modernize the refinery, in addition to other environmental sites, including mangrove nursery and “Bapco Oasis”.
