Lao Banana opens banana packing plant

(KPL) Bolikhamxay will become the first province in the central part of Laos to export bananas as the Lao Banana Company Limited or LBC has already opened its first banana processing plant in its plantation location in Na-Oi Nou Village, Pakxan District, last Saturday.
According to the company’s General Manager, Ole Toft Andersen, this company had been operating in Laos since the beginning of 2008 and next week it would be exporting its first shipment of bananas to Dubai and United Arab Emirates.
After this, he added, LBC would increase its production so that from May 2009 to May 2010 it would export 15,000 tons of bananas.
During the opening ceremony, Vice President of Lao National Assembly Dr Saysomephone Phomvihane, Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Governor of Bolikhamxay Province and the company’s General Manager, Ole Toft Andersen cut the ribbon to open this facility. This company, the general manager said would expand its plantation size to 300 hectares by the end of the year and within the next 10 years it size would be 3,000 hectares.
Touching on employment of locals, he said that currently it employs 120 workers but when it is fully operational it
would employ 2,000 workers.
“ While we are only harvesting bananas from 50 hectares of land but we are already selling them to the local markets in Park San and Vientiane and we are receiving favourable feedback from customers,” added the general manager.
Speaking on investment, he said that for the fiscal year 2008-09 it invested 21.7 billion kip or 2.5 million US dollars.
The Lao Banana Company is part of a group of companies which have successfully operated large banana farms over the last 25 years in South and Central America.
