Three Countries Bid To Host 6th World Conference On Exercise Medicine
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 6 (Bernama) -- Three countries, namely Taiwan, Philippines and India have bid to become host to the 6th World Conference on Exercise Medicine (WCEM) scheduled to be held in 2023 which will focus on topics relating to the correct dosage of exercise to prevent and treat non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
WCEM organising chairman and Global NCD activist, Jessy Lai said each country has presented their individual strength and structures to host the scientific programmes of the conference which will feature 12 categories of topics and 40 speakers from 40 countries around the world.
“India has highlighted insights on the importance of exercise in fighting NCDs in a way that it will engage Indian sports personalities and Olympians,” she told Bernama after chairing the three-day International Scientific Committee on Exercise Medicine (ISCEM) meeting which ended Wednesday.
A total of 32 committee members of ISCEM from 17 countries sat together for three days to plan the next scientific programmes of the conference and other strategies to combat NCDs.
Among those who attended were WCEM vice-chairman, Prof Dr Muhammad Lee, Dr Dusan Hamar, a Professor of Sports Medicine from Slovakia, Dr Domenico Cianflone, a world-renowned cardiologist from San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, Italy.
The others were Dr Hasbullah Ismail, a local well-known cardiac rehab specialist, Vice-Chancellor of Palamuru University, Mahbubnagar in Telangana, India, Prof L.B. Laxmikanth Rathod, Director of Physical Education of Osmania University, Hyderabad, India, Prof Rajesh Kumar and Srikanth Babu Venga, chief executive officer of Elite Physiotherapy centre.
Commenting further, Lai said the sports personalities in a way will help promote physical exercise as a medicine to people who are suffering from NCDs, adding that among the names suggested attending WCEM as guests were Indian professional badminton players and coaches including the first Indian woman to win an Olympic silver medal, PV Sindhu.
“The 6th WCEM to be held at a venue to be confirmed later like the previous conference will deliberate, among others, topics concerning exercise in the prescribed form which can reduce the prevalence of NCDs,” she added.
In a related development, Lai said the ISCEM is coming up with a metaverse (a virtual world) where users can actually experience the virtual kind of exercise with facilities like setting appointments with medical doctors and exercise therapists.
The metaverse which is expected to be launched during the 6th WCEM will also educate users on how to earn money through exercise.
The 6th WCEM will cover topics like NCD and COVID-19, Exercise and Immune System, Exercise and Cancer, Exercise and the Elderly and Exercise for the Heart.
The first WCEM was held in Langkawi, Kedah, in 2017, where experts from 25 nations shared their research findings.
