UAE showcases artworks at 53rd Venice arts Biennale event
Venice - The Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (Adach) officially launched its platform for visual arts at the 53rd Venice arts Biennale.
Sheikh Sultan Bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan, the Adach chairman, inaugurated the event on Thursday.
The platform was created by French artist and historian Catherine David. It is a meeting point for discourse and artistic production and will also serve as yardstick for emerging contemporary visual art in the UAE.
Sheikh Sultan also launched the UAE's national pavilion in the biennale. The pavilion includes visual arts, performance, video, and architectural design.
"We have taken major steps to build up an infrastructure for [the] UAE to be an important cultural gathering point and a dialogue centre between civilisations" said Sheikh Sultan after the inauguration.
"Today we are taking part in the oldest art biennale in the world aiming to interact with international artists and [the international] community in an exchange experience" he added.
Art works displayed at the Adach platform explore the impact of globalisation on society.
They also look at rapid changes affecting society through art works by 11 Emirati artists and expatriates living in the UAE. These were created under the artistic direction of French artist Catherine David.
Abdullah Al Amiri, the director of Adach's culture and arts department, told Gulf News: "It is a big achievement for the UAE to participate in the biennale. We are the second Arab country after Egypt to participate in it."
The main theme of the project is ordinary life in the city as seen through the eyes of artists. "Art works displayed at the platform show the city and its effect on the artist. We are presenting the UAE image and what is beyond it," he said.
Most of the art works displayed on the platform are videographs of Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah.
The films show the multi-faceted aspects of the UAE society, where more than 200 nationalities live in a mixed bag of traditions and lifestyles.
The UAE pavilion is supported by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Community Development, the Emirates Foundation and Dubai Culture (the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority).
Sheikh Sultan was accompanied on his tour by Mubarak Hamad Al Muhairi, the director-general of the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority; Zaki Nussaibah, Adach deputy chairman; Abdul Aziz Nasser Al Shamsi, UAE ambassador to Italy; Paolo Dionisi, Italy's ambassador to the UAE and a large number of Italian officials and cultural personalities.
Dr Lames Hamdan, commissioner of the pavilion, said the event was a historical moment not just for the UAE but all GCC countries as the event marked the participation of the first Gulf country in the event. Gulf News - with inputs from WAM
