UAE takes part in 98th ILO conference
The UAE labour market is moving towards an added-value development pattern that is built on knowledge-based economy. This pattern requires a labour force that is smaller in size but more skilled, which results in increasing growth and decreasing labour force, according to UAE Minister of Labour Saqr Ghobash.
"The labour market serves as a mirror which reflects the real state of economy. This applies to the UAE labour market which has been resilient and able to cope with the consequences of the (current global financial) crisis", Ghobash said noting the UAE government's rapid and timely action which the minister said has helped in alleviating the impacts of the crisis on the local labour markets compared to other labour markets in other countries.
Ghobash made his remarks in a statement ahead of leaving for Geneva leading the UAE delegation to the current 98th Session of the International Labour Conference, which started in Geneva, Switzerland on June 3rd and will run till June 19th.
While in Geneva, Ghobash will be meeting his counterparts from other Arabian Gulf countries on the sidelines of the said conference to discuss issues of common concern related to the labour market as well as to unify efforts to solve them.
"The current ILO conference is being held amid a global economic crisis which impacted countries around the world and labour markets in particular", said Ghobash who is leaving for Geneva tomorrow.
"The (ILO) conference provides an ideal platform for participating states to exchange expertise and closely look on the latest developments of the current economic crisis and its impacts on labour markets." Some 4,000 representatives of government and employers' and workers' organizations were brought together by the ILO conference to search for an effective response to the growing impact of the economic and financial crisis on employment, social protection and the world of work.
The annual ILO Conference has been called on to discuss ways and means to protect workers, families and enterprises from the effects of the crisis and to promote rapid economic and employment recovery.
The ILO Conference will feature on 15-17 June an ILO Summit on the Global Jobs Crisis. This Summit will be addressed by some ten Heads of State and Government, a panel of Vice-Presidents, and Labour Ministers and employers' and trade unions' leaders from the 183 ILO member States.
The agenda of the ILO Conference has been reorganized at short notice in order to focus on the global jobs crisis. Job losses have been massive in all regions. Future forecasts predict continued job losses and high and persistent unemployment and poverty well into 2010. The Conference will discuss a range of measures and policies to promote employment and enterprise development, and extend social and other protection to persons affected.
