Aso seeks China`s cooperation in adopting U.N. resolution on N. Korea
TOKYO, June 8 Kyodo -
Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso on Monday sought China's cooperation in
adopting a U.N. Security Council resolution against North Korea's second
nuclear test conducted in late May, Foreign Ministry officials said.
Referring to Security Council discussions in which China is staying reluctant
to a resolution toughening sanctions on Pyongyang, Aso was quoted as telling
visiting Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan, ''If North Korea comes to possess
nuclear weapons, it would have a serious impact on this region.''
Aso expressed hope that China will play a role in denuclearizing North Korea as
a country ''having a major influence on North Korea, also from the aspect of
trade volume,'' the officials said.
Wang was quoted as saying in response that China is ''firmly opposed to North
Korea's nuclear test,'' but stopped short of going further than expressing
hopes to ''continue communication and discussions'' at the United Nations and
pledging to convey Aso's concern to President Hu Jintao.
While Japan seeks the adoption of a strong U.N. Security Council resolution
that includes additional sanctions on North Korea, China, which is a
traditional ally of North Korea, opposes imposing tough measures on the
country.
On the bilateral front, Aso requested Wang's cooperation to seeing progress in
such issues as a joint Japan-China gas exploration project in the disputed East
China Sea and food-poisoning cases in Japan caused by tainted dumplings
imported from China, but Wang only said he would convey Aso's interest to Hu.
The two, meanwhile, welcomed the outcome of the economic ministerial meeting on
Sunday, with Wang telling Aso that the dialogue directly embodies a common view
between the two countries' leaders that they would like to strengthen strategic
and mutually beneficial relations, the officials said.
On Sunday, Japanese Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone and Wang held talks and
pledged to promote recovery in the slumping world economy and called for global
trade liberalization negotiations to conclude soon.
