MINISTER ASKS TV STATIONS TO EMPHASISE CULTURE

PETALING JAYA (Malaysia), June 9 (Bernama) -- Information, Communications
and Culture Minister Dr Rais Yatim on Monday called on television stations to
step up the emphasis on culture and the use of Bahasa Malaysia in their
productions.

"In their efforts to compete for profits, they should not discard these two
elements," he told reporters after a visit to a private television station here.

Dr Rais praised Media Prima for having charted a remarkable history in two
decades as a leading integrated media investment group and helped to spur
national development.

He said the company could also play a role in promoting the 1Malaysia
concept in the context of programme production.

Dr Rais said television stations should expand the usage of the national
language and intensify the campaign for assimilation of good manners.

He said it would be a most agreeable thing for television stations to insert
elements of good manners and instill the reading habit in the people in every
video clip or material they broadcast.
